Soap opera in the Bible? One of the most important sets of stories in the Old Testament is all about Jacob and his family. Jacob's birth-name means "one who supplants". He lives up to his name. He lies, cheats, and steals his way through life. But, in the middle of his life God gives Jacob a new name: Israel. Through his descendants, he will build a nation and move the promise God made to Grandfather Abraham forward. In readings from Genesis 37 and 50 we meet Israel's sons and dip into the stories about Joseph. Everyone behaves as characters in soap opera must. Until...
